Scripture Reading: Luke 1:26-38
Key Verse: Luke 1:35-37
The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God. What’s more, your relative Elizabeth has become pregnant in her old age! People used to say she was barren, but she has conceived a son and is now in her sixth month. For the word of God will never fail.”
How exciting it is to discover that a baby is on the way, especially if you have been trying for a few years with no success. That was our situation when we moved to Hawaii and I decided to take a civil service test and start working for the government. A few days before my scheduled test date, God changed my plans and directed me to His master plan. I was scared and a long ways from home, but after days of praying, trusting in God and thanking Him for my pregnancy, He gave me PEACE like a river.
The Annunciation - Arther Hacker, 1892 |
Nothing is impossible for God, and Mary experienced that beginning with a visit from the angel Gabriel. He told her about the pregnancy of Elizabeth, a close relative who was advanced in age and had never been able to conceive, when he was telling her that she herself would conceive by the Holy Spirit. Surprised and very confused, Mary decided to confirm what the angel had told her. Cell phones were far in the future, so Mary must have walked 40+ miles to Elizabeth’s home to discover that Elizabeth was, in fact, six months pregnant; and not only that, but Elizabeth recognized the fact that Mary was pregnant when the Holy Spirit leapt in her womb at Mary’s greeting. This visit confirmed both miracles for Mary, because Elizabeth was well past the age of childbearing and Mary herself was a virgin. Mary found peace and comfort in knowing and trusting God’s perfect plan. We, too, need to keep that faith and trust as we let God work His perfect plans in our lives.
PEACE be with you, my brothers and sisters in Christ.
Gracious God, we love you and praise you and thank you for the peace and joy and understanding that you place on our hearts and minds as we strive to work your perfect plan. Amen.
Thank you, Millie! God is good, all the time!
