Joseph’s Dream

When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
Matthew 1:24-25
Over 70 years ago my 4 year old son, wearing a bathrobe, moccasins and a head cover grabbed the microphone from the hand of the Sunday School Teacher and proceeded to deliver these lines.
“This is Joseph. Mary’s husband, a strong, brave man is he…”
At that point the South St. Louis congregation erupted in joyful laughter. The little thespian immediately paused.. He looked at the audience. He knew he had them. All eyes on him, just like he wanted it. He continued in a loud, firm voice. Moving like a Vaudeville Character, he delivered the rest of his lines and bowed. He loved it and they loved him.
I’ve forgotten in time the rest of the lines but I’ll never forget the pride and joy I felt. Nor will I forget the message. Joseph delivered. He stood up. He did the right thing.
Joseph responded when God sent his message. He did the right thing. He cherished and respected Mary. He loved and raised the child that God sent into our world. Over the next 30 years he taught him. He saw to his education. He protected him by taking the family to Egypt and back when danger threatened.
Joseph was a loving husband to Mary. and an earthly Dad to Jesus. He provided and cared for them. He honored his commitment when God spoke to him. He did the right things.
May we all respond to God’s call to us and be more like Joseph.
Dear Lord,
Just as you called Joseph to protect the Holy Family,
watch over all families who wait in hope this season.
Strengthen fathers, guide mothers,
and bless children with peace and safety.
As you prepared a home for Jesus,
help us prepare our hearts and homes for His coming.
Amen.
Thanks much, Kurt!

ReplyDeleteWe have always turned the spiritual spotlight on Mary, God's Chosen Mother. And rightly so. But Joseph was chosen by God also. Thank you for your inspiring words.
